Night weaning my 3 year old

Post by MamaMagoO? » Tue Jan 27, 2015 8:33 pm

Miss 3 has now officially passed her brother in breastfeeding duration. I suspect it may not be completely co-incidental that I am over the night feeds, although it is also because she does seem to have ramped it up in the last few weeks. Anyway, whatever the reason I have decided the time has come. I do think that part of me was waiting for her to reach 3yr 3mths as that was how old DS was when he self-weaned before trying any mummy-led weaning. But this feels right now.

Night 1 (last night) went really well despite her protestations ("But big girls love booby" and "I will stop booby when I turn into Princess Anna") and tears before bed when I explained to her she could have some booby now before sleep but then no more until the sun comes up. She did actually sleep really well and when she woke up and came into my room in the middle of the night she went back to sleep with just a cuddle. I got DH to take her back to her room after a while because I think it would be hard when I'm sleeping next to her. She woke in the move but allowed DH to settle her. When she woke up again the sun was up so I let he have a really long feed and praised her for going all night without booby.

So, so far, so good. Hoping last night wasn't just some weird freak occurrence and it continues like this.

'I will stop booby when I turn into Princess Anna' is the best protest against weaning I have ever heard!!

This is why full term breastfeeding rocks!

Yep. Awesome reasoning.

That sounds very promising. It sounds like she is at an age with good reasoning and comprehension.

I know. It's pretty cool. But I shouldn't be surprised, she's been telling us for a while now that she is going to be Anna or sometimes Elsa when she grows up

So night 2 was also really smooth. She didn't even feed to sleep at bed time. Just had a little feed then rolled over to go to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to find she had come into my bed for a snuggle but had left my boobies alone. Then she slept until morning and had a big feed when she woke up.

I think it really is just the right time for her :-)

Its so great to be getting some more sleep!

Three nights in a row!!! And we even co-slept for a while last night. I felt so refreshed when I woke up this morning. Really starting to notice the difference a bit of extra sleep is making :-D

Part of me wonders why I didn't try this ages ago but it may not have worked then. Perhaps now is just the right time for it.

It does sound like the right time for her. Makes it heaps easier for all of you.
My 3.5yo DD also rarely feeds overnight anymore; I just realised one day that she hadnt for ages. She also rarely feeds to sleep anymore. Yet I weaned my sons at 5yo at my insistence. Kids are so different!

Night 4: She slept through!!

Didn't hear a peep out of her from about 8:30pm until 6:30 am.

I also slept though... but woke up with a headache... guess I'm not used to it :?

Night 5: she came into my bed around 4am. I needed to remind her gently that she couldn't have booby until the sun came up. She didn't complain. Just went back to sleep. So that's 5 nights in a row of no booby. I seriously can't believe how easy this has been. Not what I expected at all

I'm a big believer in letting kids do things in their own time, where possible! Glad to hear things are going well. Maybe the extra rest will make other things easier for you to manage. I feel like quite a different person now that my boys are weaned and out of our bed - not that I would have wanted to push them if they hadn't been ready. Good luck!
