Lost it

Post by ClOuD_NiNe » Wed Feb 10, 2016 3:50 pm

Is it possible for an older child to completely forget how to suck, literally overnight? DD will be 3 in March, she only feeds once a day. In the last couple of days she has tried to latch on but doesn't seem to be able to form a seal. She kind of ends up sucking in her cheeks. I can't tell if she's fooling around or if she's lost the ability to suck? Any insights?

No insights but DD (4.5) sometimes says she forgot how to suck & tries to use my nipple like a straw. Usually she gets it again though. Have you got any milk?

Zero milk. I can't even squeeze a drop of colostrum out. I must be producing a tiny bit as I can see dried colostrum on my nipples. I wonder if she's lost interest with the lack of milk?

Maybe she has. Does she still ask for a feed?

She still asks at nap time but it might just be out of habit. Watch this space...

Slightly different scenario, but my DD was 3isb when I fell pregnant Sith DS. She was already down to a feed in the morning, then dropped to once every 2 or 3 days, then at about 8 weeks into the pregnancy she weaned altogether. About two weeks later I offered her a feed because she was inconsolably upset and feeling a bit sick on a plane flight - and she couldn't latch at all. She tried, then said "mummy, the milk doesn't work!". So in her case, forgetting attachment happened quite quickly.
