Coming off and attaching over and over :/

Postby Merry » Wed Nov 09, 2016 10:24 am

Since the start Ds has not been anywhere near as easy to feed as my other babies, they all latched on straight up and that was it. He was not at all interested to start with and I had to basically force him for the first week cause he didn't demand and didn't open his mouth very wide to attach. The dr looked for tongue but didn't seem to find one. He's nine weeks now and still takes a bit of work to get on but now he fusses around a lot and I have to reattach him sometimes ten times per side! My boobs are even bigger with him could that be part of the problem? He also seems to have a bit of reflux and doesn't tolerate me eating dairy, he was pooing 20-30 times a day and had bleeding nappy rash before I gave it up :(

When my DS did this (around a similar age),an LC suggested I firmly support across the back of his shoulders. They can't pull their head back so easily then. Maybe worth a try? I had to really be quite firm with the support, but DS managed to work out fairly quickly that I didn't like that game, thankfully!

Hugs and good luck xo

Is your doc experienced in diagnosing tongue tie? Posterior tongue tie is easily missed, and those symptoms you describe (not opening mouth wide enough, popping on and off the breast, reflux) sound like what DD2 experienced, she had a posterior TT. It might be worth getting a second opinion from someone who is experienced in diagnosing ties?

That's a good point, I actually have no idea if he's experienced with it lol I wonder how you find someone who is though?

A lactation consultant who is experienced in diagnosing ties is usually a good bet. There is a FB page for TT support in Australia. Not sure exactly what it's called but you could ask on there.

Glad you seem to have an answer! We got DD2's tongue tie lasered, she also had an upper lip tie and that was lasered too. LC also recommended getting some body work done, so we went to a chiro that specialises in babies. I've heard of people also having success with an osteo. Usually a few appointments are needed, the idea being that tongue/lip tie can cause pulling and tightness in other areas of the body, and once the tie is released things can move to where they should be with a bit of help. Things improved slowly for DD2 over a few weeks, so don't be discouraged if you don't see improvement straight away.
