Hi,

There's an article on baby weight gains on main ABA website which might give you some ideas?

My kids both gained weight rapidly in the first 6 months and then slowed down significantly. Which is good because if theyd continued at the same rate they would have been gigantic as toddlers!!! Around 8months they were also starting to be mobile, so burning up more energy too.

From looking at the charts it seems like your boy is following the weight curve, it just happens to be on the lower end of the scale. I've been told it's more of a worry if a baby is dropping percentiles. What's your gut feeling about his weight gains? Is he happy and meeting developmental milestones?

My son was a low gainer, he sat steadily on the 3rd percentile for the first 9 months of his life, even after eating phenomenal amounts of food upon starting solids at 6 months. In retrospect it was a combination of things... genetics, he was sleepy and had a weak suck (diagnosed by a LC), and he was a "happy chucker" (health professionals told me this probably wasn't a contributing factor but when he stopped spewing at 9 months he jumped up to the 25th percentile). At the time I was constantly worried about my supply and about his gains, but I needn't have been. He was a super chilled and happy baby, he was always on the go and meeting all his milestones. Someone has to be on the 3rd percentile, and one of those baby's was my boy. He's now a fit and healthy 5yo with a metabolism like his dad (who has been 6ft and 74kg all his adult life, no matter what he eats or how much he exercises!).

Anyway, that was our experience. If you're worried by all means get him checked out by a GP or MCHN. But I don't believe weight gain alone is a cause for concern.

Have you spoken to a breastfeeding counsellor on 1800 686 268 who is able to give you more tailored suggestions to your own individual circumstances? I would highly recommend it if you are concerned.

Have you checked out the article about getting enough milk? (I'll have to link later tonight when I can get onto my laptop)
