waist band of school skorts

Post by Esther » Wed Feb 01, 2017 7:18 am

Hello,

I spent some time putting new elastic in DD2's skorts. They're still slightly loose, despite my best measuring efforts. I had to cut into the waistband to put the new elastic in and am reluctant to try the same approach again. Suggestions? Safety pin? Hand sew some pleats?

Halp!

How loose is slightly loose? I would either go with a safety pin, or the redo the elastic. Wouldn't be the first time I've had to do that. I find the best way is to test the elastic on the child and pull it a little tight. Other than that a draw string has been helpful :) but that would require cutting into the waistband again. I did the hand sewn pleats once, didn't work, you may have better luck. Otherwise as I said, safety pin and hope she grows.
First day back here, jitters last night, hopefully all will go well as I'm working :)

Ah. Well if darts didn't work well for you Jenny, I'm perfectly happy to accept that they probably won't work here either :D

Off to see where I can rip another hole. Maybe I could cut a hole in the middle of the elastic (it's just around the back of the skort, front is flat) and fold it and sew it together....

Put a small length of elastic inside the skort at the back - about 5cm of elastic, ends anchored (by machine) 10cm apart on the waistband will draw it in a bit less than 5cm (because the elastic will stretch when she wears it. Use herringbone stitch either side of the elastic to make a casing for the elastic - when she has growth spurt just cut it all off. A little bit of soft elastic at the waist won't bug her too much, I'd think.

I did that for all my Nana's trousers when she lost a bunch of weight and I couldn't be bothered opening up the waistbands.

Or you could just zig zag the elastic right on over the top of the casing (inside), but the herringbone will be easier to remove later.

Now I've worked out how to do herringbone stitch, that all sounds feasible! Thanks MW x

brilliant, thanks MW, now I can fix DD2s pants that are just a little loose. I didn't bother before, because it wasn't bad enough.

Just did first one. Not bad! Will only do one until I try it on DD2 in the morning and make sure it's comfy for her.

Thanks MW. Has anyone told you lately that you're my favourite genius? :smt007
