fabric for dress trial

Post by Esther » Tue Dec 13, 2016 12:53 pm

Hello,

I'd like to try making a pattern (culottes), but want to do a rough version first. I'd need about 3m of fabric. What's a good fabric to use for a practise run?

Whatever is on sale for $2/m or less at the fabric discount bin. Seriously I have been known to use calico, super-cheap thin cotton or even unaligned checks (the horror!). The only reason it would matter is if your end result needs to be a particular weight to hang properly, but even so you can usually find something on the discount table of the appropriate weight that you wouldn't be caught wearing.

Op shop sheets might be drapey like your intended fabric. Be wary of anything too stiff for culottes - clown pants!!

I've been using old bedsheets for a lot of my trial stuff lately. Although for most of the things I make I need it to be at least semi-useable as I struggle to make something and then not use it.
