I've decided to have my breasts removed.

Sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse can unfortunately enter our lives at any time. Many people suffered as a child, for others the abuse only enters their lives as adults. Sometimes it is our loved ones suffering. Often pregnancy or the birth of a child can trigger these events. Substance abuse often plays a part. Your situation may be such that you need to talk to your health professional, or the police, but just telling someone who will listen can be helpful. We are not trained experts in this area of life, but we offer this forum as a supportive environment for you if and whenever you need it. No matter whether the abuse is new to your life, if it happened years ago, or has been ongoing - we are here to listen. *Please remember this is a public forum when posting details about yourself and your situation.

I've decided to have my breasts removed.

Post by pseudo » Fri Jun 23, 2017 2:35 pm

I thought I'd post here as it will soon be the end of an era! After almost 10 years of consecutive breastfeeding, I met with my breast surgeon this morning to discuss a profalactic bilateral mastectomy.

I'm going to wean DS2 over the next 2 months, then wait 4 weeks before I can have a breast MRI (I need to wait until hormones from feeding settle or else the MRI lights up) then will have the surgery and reconstruction. I had a normal mammogram this morning so I feel like a weight is off my shoulders now everything is moving forward.

My risk of breast cancer was estimated to be 75% over the next 5-10 years so it's a no brainer for me. With DP's Parkinson's disease I cannot afford to get breast cancer.

Wow pseudo - that is a huge decision. It sounds as though you are feeling good to have decided what to do though - am I right?

What will the recovery be like? I know it used to be a huge surgery with lots of physical therapy (when my MIL had her mastectomy 30 years ago) - is it still like that?

All the best

I think I remember you discussing this possibility a while ago. You sound happy with your decision. I hope all goes well with weaning, surgery and recovery
