Qld early pregnancy loss certificate from government

Post by Penguin » Sun Nov 16, 2014 8:31 am

I came across this this morning.

If you lost a pregnancy before 20 weeks or 400g in Queensland you can get a certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages. You need to get your HP to sign the form.

From what I can see it has no legal significance (in that it's not a registered birth) but it's a formal acknowledgment from the appropriate department. You can include any, all or none of place, date, weight, name. I can't work out if there is a cost or not but it doesn't look like it.

Hugs penguin. Do you think that might be something you would like to have for super baby?

That's fantastic. The 20 week cutoff to have formal recognition of a baby's death causes heartache for many.

Yes MW.

Seems like it's a brand new thing - only in the past few weeks has it been available.

Do any other states do a certificate from Births Deaths and Marriages?

I think they brought this in in Victoria a few months ago. I remember reading it. Or maybe they were planning it. It's a fantastic thing!

I did a funeral a few years ago for an infant who was born at 19 +4. It was a memorial service, not a funeral, but I would have loved to have been able to provide the family with something like this, especially since it was not their first premature loss.
DS1 born sleeping
DS2 BF 2y2m (using supply line)
DS3 BF 2y2m2w2d (because we like patterns - 9 months with SNS)
DS4 BF 3y10m3w4d (8 months with SNS)

The form was quite simple to do which is good - no mucking about with getting things witnessed or having to verify things that can't be verified etc. The only time it would be an issue perhaps is if you had trouble getting you HP to sign the form (can be a midwife or dr) (assuming in happened in Qld)

I like that you can choose what details to include - eg naming didn't seem right for us, but we can still get the certificate. It will say "Baby of Penguin and Mr Penguin".

Getting mine signed at my next GP appt then sending it off. Not sure how long it will take, I imagine they will be swamped with applications.

Our certificate arrived while we were away last week, so it's a pretty quick turnaround. I'll buy a frame tomorrow.
