Cold and Flu medications while breastfeeding

Post by Donnar190 » Fri Jun 27, 2014 9:57 am

Hi,
I am starting to feel a cold coming on :? and want something to keep the symptoms down. Everything I looked at with my local chemist had a warning about use during breastfeeding. Does anyone know of something that is okay to use?
Thanks in advance,
Donna.

Hi Donna,

mums are welcome to share their experiences if anything helped them but we are unable to give medical advice so you could always chat to your GP or give your states drug information line a call. Also please remember guys to use generic names or the PM function if you want to recommend anything

For me I find gargling salt water helps with a sore throat and I find I actually drink a lot more water when I have a cold. Rest rest rest. (you know as much as you can with a baby)

Hope it passes quickly for you

Hot lemon & honey? My DH always requests a stirfry with loads of garlic and chilli when he's coming down with a cold. Apparently there is a scientific basis for eating chicken soup - simmering the bones release something that boosts the immune system. I'd send you some only my teleporter's broken again. Cold and flu medications aren't recommended for several reasons - some of them have a drying effect and can affect your supply. Some are simply not proven safe for babies. If you need something for headaches or joint pain, consider ibuprofen instead of paracetamol. There is some evidence linking paracetamol to asthma.
Hope you feel better soon!

This is what I was told - I'm not giving you advice but saying what I found.

The concern with pseudoephedrine is not that it passes through to bub so much (although it does go through in very small amounts), but that it works by minimising your bodily secretions like snot, and unfortunately, milk. The figures I've seen say that there is on average a 24% drop in supply. So if bub is little then you would probably need to comp with EDM/ DEMB/ formula. If bub is a big boofy toddler then not a worry.

This is what I've been told - please follow the links that Mooki gave!

actually other way around Pelly... I can't take ibuprofen because of my asthma, but Paracetemol is good ( thank god because I have really bad cold that is verging on Man flu at varying times of the day.)

Thank you for pulling me up, LTM. I should have been more specific.
There is some evidence that exposure to paracetamol in a child's first year can trigger asthma in early childhood. My doctor advised me not to use paracetamol during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary, given our family history of asthma. This is the most recent thing I could find on a quick google:

Ibuprofen is not recommended for people who already have asthma. It should not be taken during pregnancy either. Aspirin should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so that doesn't leave us with much, does it? :(
