ameda purely yours troubleshooting

Post by Penguin » Sat Jan 31, 2015 2:11 pm

help please. when i pump, after two or three pumps the diaphragm doesn't unbunch all the way, so i lose suction.
ie it bunches up to suck, but then it only partly unbunches so i'm losing lots of suction ability because it's starting half bunched up. does that make sense?

what am i doing wrong?

Yes, Jenny did too so I'm sure they'll be along. It's not urgent.
It did get a bit better when I turned down the speed - I've not had a pump with two dials before.

Is it brand new? I wonder if the membrane has perished a little bit and lost some of its recovery? Are they replaceable - I know the Medela ones are.
It's OK Pluto, I'm not a planet either

Brand new - bought it from MD last time they had a big sale (two months or so ago).

Hmmm, the internet tells me that I'm not the only one with this problem :(
Did I just spend shitloads of money on a pump that doesn't work?

Sorry Penguin, not a problem I had :( Can't even remember what it all looked like at the minute, so not much help at all.

Is there a spare valve to try? Altho knowing you, this is probably something you've already attempted.

If you really get stuck, I can post on BPHO mailing list for further tips. Let me know.

And good luck!

It's like a little silicone cup that sits on to of the flange bit, and the white cap and tubing attach to the top of that.
I've only been single pumping so there will be one unopened one at least for the other side, and there's probably more in the box. I'll try later tonight. Surely they'll send me a new one under warranty though? Maybe I should call md.

Def try another little cup (it's coming back to me...). Call MD in Monday. It's so new it will have to be a warranty issue. Annoying!

I didn't have that problem, sorry. I can imagine if you had the suction turned up really high, it could get sucked in andstuck, but you'd be in serious pain too, so I can't see how that would actually happen...

I hope you can get it sorted out. I liked that pump, but also liked the medela hand pump and didn't mind another, very basic type that I was given too... I don't think I pumped enough to develop strong opinions about pumps.

Could it be damp. Mine did it a couple of times when it wasn't properly dry. Also happened once when I lost suction at the breast, so the air came back in from the flange rather than the silicon thing. Did I send you any spares? Also I found that using it on a low suction at a low speed worked really well for me. I nearly always pumped fairly slowly, Can't remember which numbers I tended to stick with but they were on the low side of the middle :)

Lady at MD had never heard of it, I'm waiting for the ameda distributor to call me back.

Dunno Jenny re damp - I've tried drying it but it still happens, but it's going to get slightly wet from the milk anyway (on the milk side). Other side (pump side) is dry.

The ameda distributor rang back. She said it could be a problem with the white valve - apparently they have been superseded so this pump must have been sitting on the shelf for a while. She's going to send me some new clear valves, if not I have to take it back.

for those playing along at home, the clear valves arrived today. it's happening a lot less now - i've only had to break the seal on the white cap at the top a few times, not every two or three pumps. MD hadn't heard of the problem (or the solution) when i rang so i'll email them. in case someone else has the problem.
