how do anti-depressents work

Stressed….depressed or just feeling emotionally isolated and in need of a chat? Sometimes the labels don’t fit but the emotional baggage we carry is the same…….if your life isn’t all beautiful like the nappy ads would have us believe, feel free to have a chat here. It’s important to have somewhere safe where you can be yourself and talk about the things that REALLY matter.

Dunno - probably varies. Can you call your pharmacy or GP if you are concerned?
It's OK Pluto, I'm not a planet either

I'm not a doctor. But my understanding is that some side effects can become apparent almost immediately. They might "just" be initial reactions that settle down as you get used to the medication, and your doctor can discuss that with you. Other side effects take longer to show up, and sometimes those are more serious, and a sign that the medication isn't right for you.
BUT, and this is important, sometimes anti-depressants can make you feel much, much worse, sometimes even suicidal. If you are experiencing anything like that, please see your doctor immediately.

Sorry, I should have said that it's just the 'settling in' side effects. I was told they should settle within 2 weeks or so, but I forgot to ask how quickly do they start.
Thanks

If in any doubt doubt, ask. No such thing as a silly question with meds.

Hugs. Hope things settle down soon.

Anything from straight away to years down the track.
Ditto what Pelly said.

Hugs jessles. I've never taken them so no experience of advice here. Also I haven't read the whole thread but I have to say I can understand the feeling that therapy wouldn't work for you. I have experienced antenatal depression and it was explained to me as more like a chemical thing, not something I could change with counseling iykwim? I'm assuming PND is similar in that regard?
I hope you are feeling more like yourself really soon xx
