Breathlessness

Post by AussieBritLu » Sat Jan 30, 2016 1:04 pm

I'm really struggling to breathe......I've taken my inhaler but it doesn't seem to be helping, I'm laying infront of a fan for the added air but it's not helping....and DH is at cricket....so I'm solo parenting again and could really do without it!

How long till hubby gets home Lu? Is there someone you can call to babysit if your breathlessness gets worse?
A friend of mine had a heart attack due to the strain of breathing caused by asthma so please head to hospital if you think you need to! x

At least another hour to go unless another storm rolls through.

It's settled down a bit since the first storm came through

Sounds like a pre-thunderstorm allergy attack. I read a theory that this was caused by rye grass pollen in the air being split into very fine particles due to the electrical activity in the air, then the storm blows it through...

Do you have the possibility of taking more of the inhaler or another anti-histamine of some sort if it's an allergic reaction ?

Yep, my mum works in the health department (in admin) and they get all staff alerts before every thunderstorm because the EDs can expect lots of extra business. Oobiwoo is travelling alright this year, but two years ago he missed weeks of school in a bad storm season.

Hope you feel better soon and don't muck about if it doesn't get better - the ambos can hook you up to some oxygen right at your house while you wait for DH to come home.

It's interesting.....it quite possibly was...I also feel it could be something else....which I will talk to the midwife about on Thursday.

Breathlessness / dizziness can also be symptoms of low iron (either haemoglobin, or ferritin / iron stores) - I really noticed being more breathless in my 2nd pregnancy vs my first, and sure enough, when I spoke to my midwife and we ordered some blood tests, my iron stores had decreased quite rapidly around second trimester. I ended up taking an iron supplement and a few other things to help increase my iron, and the breathlessness disappeared. Hope it's something treatable/fixable for you, too!

Yea I'm thinking iron possibly too... My levels had dropped from 144-117 between 10-26 weeks. With the HG I can't even face taking iron supps but I have been trying to eat more iron rich foods (when I've been able to eat that is)

I suspect that even iron-rich food or iron supplements will really make a huge difference, but the drop in iron is due to 'dilution' as your blood volume increases but not necessarily the concentration of red blood cells... definitely worth getting checked in case you have an imbalance of ketones or something going on... do you get rehydrated with an IV too ? I found with severe morning sickness that there's a 'point of no return' with dehdration and lack of eating when you get beyond being able to eat...might be worth checking with the hospital if your too dehydrated...I had an IV rehydration at that point with my third pregnancy and it made a huge difference...

Not that I'm aware of.....I've been drinking a fair bit of water and keeping it down (although this morning I was close to bringing it back up again)

Will check with the midwife on Thursday when I see them about it all and see what they think/suggest.
