I went to a boarding school (as a day student, not a boarder). Most of our boarders were from properties, etc, but there were a few whose parents lived in town and wanted a life of their own. A few whose parents were using boarding school as juvie, too, I suspect. We had weekly boarders (kids who lived up to 2 hours or so away and would go home every weekend) and full boarders (school terms). There were a few who stayed on over holidays as well, especially if their parents were travelling, etc. They could get day leave to go visit friends, etc, and as seniors, could be employed by the school to do gardening, etc.

I read a lot of girly British fiction as a kid, so I had a rather romanticised view of boarding school, LOL. We never did play lacrosse, though there was a fair bit of vigoro *shudder*

A friend of mine is a diplomatic kid - she went to boarding school in the UK while her dad was a diplomat in Africa. She has the most amazing accent - bits of several African countries, plus upper class Brit. I love talking to her :)

My friend who taught in the UK was there long enough to pick up an accent, too - she STILL sounds like a Pom some days.
