What is your fav music

Post by Andypandy » Sun Nov 13, 2016 3:25 pm

I miss playing and singing. Now i just listen. What do you like to listen to? Any genre.

I love Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for Clarinet and Arnold's Sonatina. In my head i am playing them. I also love Bach's Bist du bei mir. Oh and Ladyhawke's Let it Roll. Anything Lana Del Rey.

I've rediscovered Joan Baez recently. Early stuff, not recordings from 80s! She did lots of Bob Dylan songs....

I still love Salome (Strauss) and The Planets. Good movie music out there too. Flanders & Swann. Copland's Old American Folk Songs, Barber violin concerto, also a gorgeous vocal work of his "Knoxville Summer of 1915" (I think?) Nigel westlake's Entomology....

Porgy and Bess. Prokofiev ballet scores - Romeo & Juliet or Cinderella. Both gorgeous.

Look forward to seeing all the favourites!

Oh i love that one.

In yr 12 we studied Die Forelle. In our test we had to give a fact about his life. I answered that he died of syphillus. Lol. Now that is all i think when i hear him.

Bahaha. Wasn't he also the one that damaged his hands, trying to increase their stretch on keyboard? No wait, Schumann?!

I'm not a big classical fan - I think I just don't have the education to really engage and understand what I'm listening to. But I love Mozart's Requiem Mass. We sang it in choir at uni and it gets used in lots of TV shows and movies so I hear the Dies Irae at least a few times a year!

I listen to a great podcast called Revisionist History and there is an episode about different types of artists - the spit out a masterpiece in 15 minutes geniuses, and the work on the same idea for years and keep perfecting it and tweaking it geniuses. The podcast talked about Leonard Cohen taking years to write Hallelujah and it is a great story how that came to be such a well known and extensively covered song.

But usually I just like things I can sing along to - the Pogues, Violent Femmes, Indy Australian rock music, cheesy German pop songs :-D
It's OK Pluto, I'm not a planet either

I listen to a hugely diverse range of music, but I do have an enduring love of folk/Appalachian/alt-country music - Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Martha Wainwright (and her brother Rufus and dad Loudon), Mumford & Sons, Ryan Adams, The Decemberists, Laura Marling, Lucinda Williams, Of Monsters and Men. In a similar vein, some of the instrumental work of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor is lovely.

Less mountain-music, more popular stuff  - I love Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley. The Smith Street Band. All are really evocative for me of various events.

I listen to all sorts of stuff, from classical to just radio songs.

My absolute all time favourite though is a composer Joe Hasaishi who has written for a lot of the Japanese animated films. In particular my most favourite of his is "summer" it is such a beautiful piece.
