quick homework help for DD1 please

Postby Esther » Fri May 06, 2016 7:11 pm

One of her spelling words is "ineligible". She needs to give the meaning. I'm finding it quite a hard concept to help an 11yo grasp. Any suggestions very welcome!

She gets the concept of it being something you can't do because you don't meet certain criteria eg. She understands that she us ineligible to drive or get married, due to her age. The difficulty is writing down a definition that makes sense to her. The Oxford Shorter English definition makes perfect sense to me, but not her. The word doesn't even appear in her school dictionary :?

:-( that's a bit harsh.

Ineligible: unable, not allowed?

Yes, that's what we ended up going with in the end. It's so hard, because there's legal elements to it at times, but at other times not. Was a challenging exercise. Thanks for your input Lu! Doing well with bub and other children's English homework all at the same time 8)

And let's not even talk about the subsequent discussion of a meaning for ellipse. Or why lieutenant isn't pronounced the way it's spelt. Ditto colonel...

Last year of primary school. Who'd have thought it was so complicated?

Sounds challenging....I've got all this to look forward to! Haha

Well one thing about having a tablet and a baby who has just wanted to feed all day today. I just about got dinner cooked and dished up and eaten before she woke tonight! Although the two older kids refused to eat dinner.

Thanks Andy. The thing that was frustrating us all was coming up with a definition. She could put it in a sentence easily enough, which kind proves that she understands it. To me, at least! But there you go....

I think it is probably a useful skill to learn how to explain what a word means. Might save her from becoming a Miss Malaprop in the future. Which will stop people like me from secretly judging her!!
