Am I just a cynic or is this DODGY?

Post by PellyintheWilderness » Tue Jul 29, 2014 11:47 am

An ad for this popped up while I was looking at a news story about early childhood in my local paper on the Internet.

http://profuturastore.com.au/products/a ... east-cream

And I thought to myself (after the initial WTF?) why would that particular company actually want mums to succeed at breastfeeding?
Comments and analysis, please! If any of you scientifically minded people could comment on the ingredients, that would be most appreciated.
Perhaps we could code-name it Suspicia?

Cynical marketing ploy I reckon. As if you need a special cream to help prepare your breasts for feeding! Doesn't even say what it is supposed to do. I'm not a chemist and don't know what all of those ingredients but I suspect its just a mousturiser (?)

It is made by a company that also makes ABM. And it is moisturiser.

I suspect it is an attempt at building brand recognition in the critical antenatal period, so that 'just in case' breastfeeding doesn't work out, you know which brand to turn to for all your ABM needs

It is dodgy. It just just a moisturizer, probably very similar to sorbolene cream. Not even anything 'special' in there like vitamin E, which is often used for trying to avoid stretch marks.

I also suspect the website claim about "extending your child's breastfeeding journey" would not be allowed on the packaging, because label claims are subject to evidence, and I doubt they have evidence to show that it somehow increases the duration of breastfeeding....

Definitely about brand recognition and promoting their formula...

You could call their "experts" and ask for the evidence

What's with that last paragraph going on about their nutrition bollocks? Completely out of place on a page about nipple cream! Unless they're suggesting babies should eat it.

Well, we do encourage women to become familiar and comfortable with their breast anatomy to prepare for breastfeeding. I suppose massaging in a moisturiser 2-4 times a day is one way of doing that...

Moisturiser, yes. Re-formatted sorbolene cream at $11.95 for 100mL? You could buy 300g of cold-pressed organic coconut oil for that, and have change

I e-mailed their "lactation consultants" to ask about the cream, along the lines of, "Oh, help, I didn't know I needed to do anything to prepare my breasts! And by the way, is it safe to use if I have eczema?"
I got an e-mail back the other day, weeks later, saying that as I had eczema I shouldn't use the product, and they recommended a lanolin-based cream instead. So yep, it's basically a moisturiser, and not even suitable for sensitive skin.

And now they have your email Pelly, as they would if you bought it and gone through the check out process.
Let us know if you get any 'useful' 'information' 'articles' appearing in your inbox.

I reckon it's all about getting access to the contact details of expectant mums, with the bonus side effect of undermining bf fake complicating bf at the same time.

I'm aware that I've added myself to their mailing list. It's kind of deliberate - I'm actually quite curious as to what I might get sent! Will keep you posted.
