Breastfeeding support in unlikely places in the US!

Post by Bailey's Mum » Mon May 26, 2014 1:41 pm

A friend of mine has just done a trip for work. She lives and works on the East Coast of the USA. Last week, she visited the West Coast, and a number of IT high-flyers. In each location, there were breastfeeding/expressing rooms on every floor, great conditions for workers, with lots of lactation breaks, etc. One very well-known company supported her beautifully - she needed to express before a meeting, but the room on that floor was in use. Her meeting was with the CEO of a world-leading IT company (she's a patent examiner), so he said, "Step into my office. I'll just wait out here. Text me when you're ready to start the meeting." How amazing is that! Compared to the airport in her hometown, where there is one parenting room in an entire major international airport, and all of the powerpoints have been ripped out of the wall, so she couldn't even plug in her pump!

I've heard great things about conditions at those companies before - things like unlimited ping pong breaks to improve creativity. But my friend has had so many negative experiences in DC that she was overjoyed to find things so vastly different on the other side of the country. I told her it was because they were closer to Australia, and she should come visit soon 8)
