Mothers Direct link with "lactation biscuits"

Post by strolltotheshops » Thu Oct 10, 2013 5:53 pm

Yes I know that beneficial commercial arrangements are probably necessary so that the ABA has a range of income sources and links to marketing channels blah blah blah, but I think it's *really* inappropriate that Mothers Direct is part of a group competition https://rafl-fb-tab-app.s3.amazonaws.co ... 52322.html which has branded 'lactation biscuits' (which we all know are not efficacious in relation to milk supply, and might make people doubt their milk supply without understanding how breastmilk production and removal actually work) as a prize.
I know that paragraph should be split into actual sentences, but I'm too cross about this.
I'm even having a little private protest by posting this in the Protecting Promoting & Supporting Breastfeeding section of the forum rather than in the ABA & You section :D.

I'm fuming about this. It was also posted on aba's Facebook but the post has been deleted. I'm waiting for more info.

Not 100% sure what's happening, but my blood pressure spikes every time I hear about these commercial biscuits.

Am still upset that none of our emails and letters expressing concern and disappointment were replied to.

I saw this too, I was going to post my disappointment on ABA's Facebook page (where I saw it) but thought I would get more info before going off half cocked.

I think it compromises the integrity of the ABA for a few reasons:
* it breaches the COE. The ABA is supposed to provide mums with relevant, up to date information. Endorsing lactation cookies through a competition provides false information about supply and demand and galactagogues. This is not supporting mums. It is potentially impacting breastfeeding negatively.
* ABA needs to be recognised as a definitive source of accurate breastfeeding information. Science tells us that lactation cookies are a placebo at best. Do we really want to community at large to think that our info is based on quackery and woo?
* the ABA needs to think about who it aligns itself with commercially. A lactation cookie company is ethically one step away from a formula company- both sell women things they don't need, potentially interfere with breastfeeding and get profit from women.

Well said AP.

Very upset.

Link may no longer be on main ABA Facebook page, but it is still on ABA-related pages.
