Relactation has commenced! Now what?

Post by violeta » Fri Jan 24, 2014 11:57 pm

Hi everyone,

I have decided to take the steps to relactate my 5 month old daughter again. She was breastfed with formula supplementary feeds from birth due to low birth weight and poor weight gain. We stopped the breastfeeding at around 3 months as she was having allergic reactions to foods I was eating. I had tried what I thought was a gluten free, dairy free diet... but I was still consuming foods that I didn't know had gluten and dairy in them. (She has a cows milk protein allergy and is highly sensitive to even traces of milk proteins). She is now on prescription formula. She also has multiple other breathing and feeding issues, including reflux...which we have finally sorted out... to the point that I can try breastfeeding again. She was the worst feeder before, so I'm happy if she only takes breastmilk from the bottle, although I will be aiming for exclusive breastfeeding.

Bubs was recently admitted to hospital and refused all her formula and solid feeds. It was here that she tried "hunt" for my breast again - prior to this, she wasn't interested in it. This is what has prompted me to start again - she is obviously interested now, and now that her medical issues are sorted I'm desperate to provide the best for my baby too!

I've started on medication to increase supply tablets (10mg 3 x p/day), a breastfeeding support tablet (with Blessed thistle and fenugreek), and taking nursing mothers tea. I have started pumping regularly (with an electric breast pump), and over the past two days have gone from nothing to a few drops of milk!

What else should I be doing? I am currently on a gluten, dairy, soy and egg free diet also.

I have tried getting my daughter to attach, but she's not really interested when there is nothing there. She will put her mouth over the nipple, but doesn't really know what to do from there.

How long did it take for others to relactate?

Many thanks!

Hi and welcome to the fourm!

What a story - I really hope things go well for you from here! A few drops of milk is a GREAT sign.

I too second calling the helpline. Details here http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/product ... elling.asp The counsellor on the phone will be able to give you lots of hints and tips.

The forum software has autocorrected the name of your medication to 'medication to increase supply', in case you were wondering what happened there.

No other advice from me, but can I be part of your cheer squad?

I think the main website is having a few issues at the moment. If you can't get through, the phone number is 1800 686 268.

Thank you everyone!

I can definitely use a cheer squad!!! :D

I will give the hotline a call, and see what they suggest.

Just a small update - so far the results have been good, in five days I have gone from bone dry to several drops - even a tiny amount of squirting lol! Things are working!! ... :)

Hi V,

Its good to see someone trying to relactate. I am thinking and planning to relactate as well. My bub is almost 5 months now and was interesting to know how you are planning it. Keep up the hard work and update us on how you are going with it.

Best wishes
J

Good for you! :D

Maybe see if there is a lactation consultant who you can work with locally aswell, they can do a lot of checking (ie, attachment etc)

Best of luck and great job!
