So excited - had to share my success so far!

Post by Jewel80 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:10 pm

My DD2 was born on 7th August with a severe tongue tie that made breast feeding terribly painful. By day 7, my nipples were bleeding and she refused to feed from them. I expressed and fed her in a bottle until my nipples were rested but she then refused to go back on the breast. She also had her tongue tie fixed during that time.
I was so discouraged that I tried only for a day or two get her back on the breast and she actively fought me. So I gave up and resigned myself to expressing some of her feeds and supplementing the rest with formula.
Today it became apparent that her system is not coping with the formula - she has bad eczema, has become reflux-y and vomits up a lot of the formula feeds. The health nurse today suggested a trip to the GP was necessary to sort it out.
I felt so guilty today that she is unwell because she is not breast feeding. This afternoon, I thought I'd give one last shot at trying to breast feed her. After a few minutes of screaming, she latched onto both breasts and had a great feed.
Tonight, I've just put her to bed after feeding from both breasts, having a further 50ml of EBM and then another feed from the right side. She no longer fights me to get onto the breast, but seems to know exactly what to do.
I am so excited that breast feeding may not be over for us! It's early days yet, but I'm just so happy that she's latched on and had (pain free I might add) feeds from both sides! I honestly thought that I'd failed again (I didn't feed DD1 successfully) and added to that, the guilt that she has become unwell due to formula.
I really cannot express how happy and excited I am right at the moment! If you are struggling with the thought of re-lactating, don't give up! My daughter looks like she'll be back on the breast after three weeks of bottle feeds! I hope that by this time next week, she won't be using bottles at all and will be completely and happily breastfed!
