Just wean the baby!!

Post by willandjacksmum » Thu Dec 22, 2005 9:34 am

We had a story in our local paper about a family who was down on its luck and the father can't get a job here as he is an American and the mother is still BF her 11 month old daughter so she can't go back to work.

Anyway many comments were made to the paper (not letters to the editor, many sms to ed which are anon) that she should just wean her daugthter and get a job and it made me feel angry that people were just like, well just wean the baby. The mother also said her daughter was out of sorts with moving (from USA to Aust) and that bascially I think the BF was a comfort to her baby.

I felt like writing a letter but never managed to. But I wanted to know to, you can keep up breastfeeding if you return to work through expressing can't you?

Hi Monique,

What a shame that some of the general public have not supported this Mothers' decision.

It is very possible, like you said to return to work and express breastmilk while working. Someone needs to let this Mum know about ABA

Thanks Monique for sharing this article with us. And yes, as Suemoo said, many mothers combine paid work and breastfeeding. There's lots of articles about this on the ABA website - if you go to http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/index.html , the right-hand column has a group of articles titled "Returning to the paid workforce". And of course we have a $5 booklet on this: Breastfeeding, Women and Work http://www.mothersdirect.com.au/prod124.htm
I hope this mum is able to access supportive information like this to ease their family's stress.
Anne :)
